The bathroom is the most personal space in the home – and one of the most complex to plan and execute. It needs to function flawlessly on a practical and functional level, while also feeling like the most intimate and restorative place in the house. Both are possible, but they require precise planning.
Before selecting materials, tiles, fixtures, vanity units, lighting, or accessories, the first question is always about functionality: who uses the space, how often, what are their habits, and what can be improved?
A bathroom for a young or older couple will be designed very differently from one used by children of any age – walk-in shower vs. bathtub, single vs. double vanity, storage for toiletries, towels, and supplies, accessibility and ease of use above all. Needs always define the layout – never the other way around.
Principles for good planning:
- Making full use of every square meter – smart niches, service cabinets, mirrors, concealed storage.
- Materials that stand up to moisture, aggressive cleaning products, and daily wear over years.
- Accessibility and safety above all.
- Separate lighting for each function: general lighting, focused lighting at the mirror, mood lighting, and subtle night lighting.
- Proper ventilation – and where it isn’t possible, preparatory infrastructure for the right solutions.
A well-planned bathroom feels like a private spa every morning and every evening. And sometimes, that is all you need.
